‘Not a great deal to it,’ Craddock reported at dinner that evening. He had come back with the coal grimed into his skin, the tarry smell on his clothes. ‘Not a big fire. Might have been burning an hour, so probably he lit it at first light, at the earliest, probably as soon as he spotted us coming in.’

‘They were watching for us, not expecting us, not with any certainty,’ said the Chaplain.

‘A deduction?’ asked Longville.

‘If you lived up here,’ Craddock challenged him, ‘and winter coming, would you burn four hundred tons of coal on spec?’

‘Well the sooner you coal and we can get out of here, the better,’ Longville told him. ‘If we sit here close in to the shore much longer, someone’s going to get shot.’
